In Proteus, work packages organize and structure the work required to complete project outcomes. Depending on the level of financial and progress tracking your project requires, you can build out work packages using either the Standard Method or the Enhanced Method.
1. Standard Method: Single Work Package Budget
Best for simpler work packages or tightly coupled deliverables.
In the standard setup, you assign one or more deliverables to a single work package.
How it works: All assigned resources log their time and effort against the overarching work package.
Budget & Tracking: A single total budget is set for the entire work package. Progress, actual costs, and remaining budgets are managed at the work package level rather than per individual deliverable.
When to use: Ideal when deliverables are closely connected, managed by the same team, or when granular tracking per deliverable adds unnecessary administrative overhead.
2. Enhanced Method: Deliverable-Level Budgeting & Tracking
Best for complex work packages requiring detailed progress and cost visibility.
The enhanced version gives you granular control by breaking down tracking directly to each deliverable within the work package.
How it works: You assign multiple deliverables to the work package, but assign individual budgets, estimates, and resource plans to each deliverable.
Budget & Tracking: Time and expenses are logged directly against specific deliverables. This allows you to monitor progress, earned value, and actual costs for each deliverable independently, while still grouping them under one parent work package for high-level management.
When to use: Ideal for larger work packages with distinct milestones, varying skill requirements per deliverable, or strict client reporting requirements.
